P.E.I.H.S Animal Adoption Fees Effective April 1, 2008

The P.E.I. Humane Society placed 867 pets into new, loving homes in 2008 and this year we hope to match even more homeless animals with their new “forever friends”. If you are interested in adopting an animal from us, it’s very important that you read and understand the following explanation of our adoption procedures and the steps that make up the process

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

Important Information:

You have to be 18 years of age or older to adopt a pet. If you would like to adopt one of our dogs, all members of your household must come to the Shelter to meet your potential new pet (including any dogs you may already own) before the adoption can be finalized.

    The overnight holding period applies to everyone and is not negotiable;

    All dogs and cats leaving the P.E.I. Humane Society must have an ID tag or license.

Choose the pet you want.  A good first step is to check out our “Adoption” page (click here). Then we encourage you to come to the Shelter to visit with the animal.  You may even see if the animal is compatible with pets already in your home by taking advantage of our “Get Acquainted Room” here at the Shelter.

Please Note: We can place a one-time “Hold” on a pet you are interested in adopting.  This hold will automatically expire on the next business day,  two hours after the Shelter opens (i.e. 12:00 Noon or 2:00 p.m. depending on the day).  If you put a hold on an animal and wish to adopt it, we must receive your completed adoption application before the hold automatically expires.

Complete an Adoption Application and submit it for approval (in person or by facsimile);

I’M READY TO SUBMIT AN ADOPTION APPLICATION.

WHAT NOW?

CLICK HERE to access our Online Adoption Application.

If you submit your application online, it will be reviewed on the next business day and you will be contacted by a Shelter staff member.  If you submit your application in person at the Shelter during regular business hours, we can usually review it immediately.

If the animal you have chosen is not spayed/neutered yet, a surgery date will be booked.  If the animal is already spayed/neutered, there is still an overnight holding period before you can take your pet home. This gives you time to think about your decision and get ready for your pet.

An appointment is booked for the completion of the adoption, which takes place during our regular business hours. When you arrive, you will pay the adoption fee plus a dog license fee (if applicable), be given your Information Booklet and any additional documents. And you and your new pet can head home!
