Remembering A Pet's Unconditional Love

THUNDER

Thunder came into the MacLellan household on December 25, 1991. Picking him up from the Humane Society on the 23rd, my Mom had hidden him in her office for the next day and a half, blaring the garage radio to drown out his barking. On the morning of the 25th, I met my best friend for the next 14 years.

Some type of terrier mix, Thunder possessed that mutt charm and invincibility. Throughout his 14 years, Thunder spent his days chasing four children, putting up with my pathetic attempt at a “Dog Olympic”, camping, exploring the brook, taking trips in the truck and eating ice cream with my Dad.

Thunder’s invincibility came through one night when a police car chasing a strange dog out of our yard hit him; he went 2 steps too far. Luckily, the RCMP officer’s prediction was wrong. Thunder slowly rose to his feet and began turning in circles.  He quickly bounced back, spending only 3 days at the vet.

As thunder got older in age, he would come to visit me and my sisters at University, but was quite content not to adjust to the city life. He was a country boy at heart. Although he was “getting up there”, Thunder barely slowed down, but it was inevitable that this old fella would live forever. We began to find growths on thunder’s eye, lip and head. Having these growths removed gave Thunder one last great year.

It was Tuesday, November 2, 2004 when Thunder had his last car ride. Days before, he had begun having trouble breathing and after taking him to the AVC, we realized he had multiple tumours.  These days Thunder sleeps down by a cherry tree, marking his grave in a small wooden coffin that my grandfather and my cousin, Roy, built for him. He has been missed and there will always be a soft spot in the hearts of everyone who ever met him. I know I speak for everyone in the MacLellan family when I say “Love you lots and until we meet again, old fella.”
