Fur Farming
1. The P.E.I. Humane Society is opposed to the pain and suffering experienced by animals raised and killed for the production of fur.
2. If fur farming continues, the P.E.I. Humane Society believes that:
a). All fur farms must comply with recommended codes of practice, and recommends that these codes of practice be reviewed periodically and amended to improve standards of care;
b). Animals raised and killed for the production of fur deserve to be protected from suffering at all stages of their lives and deserve to be provided with care that meets their behavioural needs and ensures their physical and psychological well-being;
c). Methods of killing must be appropriate to the species, in all cases producing immediate unconsciousness without pain or panic and inevitable subsidence to death without the regaining of consciousness;
d). The P.E.I. Humane Society recommends formal training and education based on national standards of all fur farmers and employees with the expectation that the greater the knowledge of the breeding cycles, ethology and nutritional needs of the animals being raised, the greater the consideration given to them.
