The
P.E.I. Humane Society provides a number of animal protection services
Province wide. Each service is briefly explained below with a
hyperlink to a service paragraph.
Adoption
Program
Almost 850 pets were adopted to new, loving homes in 2002. When
choosing an animal for the adoption program the Society looks at a
number of factors: behavior, temperament, age, health, availability
(if stray time is expired), space in the shelter, the adoption
possibilities of the animal and the number of animals already in the
adoption program.
Emergency Help For
Injured Animals
The P.E.I. Humane Society operates a 24 hour emergency service for
injured animals. Call 902 892-1191 and leave a message:
Giving your name, address, telephone number.
Location of the emergency.
Details about the animal.
Our on-call Officer will respond as quickly as possible.
Note: Depending on the nature and severity of the injuries, animals
will be taken to the Atlantic Veterinary College or the P.E.I. Humane
Society shelter.

Cruelty
and Abuse Investigation
The P.E.I. Humane Society enforces the P.E.I. Companion Animal
Protection Act, which came into force on June 8, 2002.
Animal
control bylaws are a commonsense approach to encouraging Responsible
Pet Guardianship
Pets
that are healthy, identified, spayed/neutered, properly trained,
socialized and kept under control are seldom the cause of conflict.
Some pet owners are unaware or neglectful of their responsibilities to
their pets or allow their pets to annoy neighbors or harass wildlife
or livestock. This can result in dog bites, threats to people or
animals, damage or contamination of property, pet overpopulation,
abuse or neglect of animals and other consequences.
-
The solution involves effective legislation and education that
encourage Responsible Pet Guardianship.
-
The P.E.I. Humane Society enforces animal control bylaws in the
following municipalities of Prince Edward Island:
Charlottetown
Stratford
Cornwall
Murray River
Lower Montague
Note:
To find out if you live in a municipality with Animal Control
Bylaws, call your municipal office, or the P.E.I. Humane Society.
Ask for a copy of the animal control bylaw in your area.
- Many
municipalities do not have animal control bylaws. The P.E.I. Humane
Society will send a model animal control bylaw to your community
council and will speak to your council about the benefits of animal
control.
- The
P.E.I. Dog Act is provincial legislation which applies to dog owners
who live in unincorporated, rural communities in Prince Edward Island.
To find out if you live in a rural area covered by the P.E.I. Dog Act,
call the P.E.I. Humane Society.
Responsible
Pet Guardianship
Take your pet to the veterinarian for annual vaccinations and when
sick or injured.
Provide fresh food and water every day.
Always ensure your pet is wearing a visible ID tag - either a license,
or name tag.
Spay/neuter your pet to prevent pet overpopulation.
Play with your pet, give it plenty of exercise and companionship.
Obey animal control bylaws in your community; be a considerate
neighbor.
Never let your pet run at-large or disturb the peace.
Shelter For Homeless Animals
Over 2500 animals were admitted to
the animal shelter in 2005. Many were surrendered by owners who
no longer wanted them. Others were brought to the shelter
by Good Samaritans concerned for the health and welfare of stray,
abandoned or neglected animals.
