WHAT IS THE PROGRAM ALL ABOUT?
Since the program began in 2001, it
has worked to meet certain objectives. Student trainers at the shelter
are there primarily to provide socialization, environmental enrichment
and basic training for the shelter dogs. Not all dogs are trained, but
the longer a dog is at the shelter, the more training it will receive.
We have taught many old dogs some new tricks...
WHAT ELSE DOES THE
PROGRAM DO?
In addition to
training dogs, students who work in the program aim to provide knowledge
and training to Humane Society staff and volunteers. We are also a
valuable resource to the public and new adopters. Most of the questions
asked revolve around general animal behaviour and continuing training at
home. We welcome questions regarding any training problems and try to
provide as much helpful information as we can.
Another goal is to
assist the
shelter attendants as much as possible by helping to improve their
environment
too. Through fundraising activities, we have been able to provide the
shelter with a dishwasher and improved lighting, as well as numerous
leashes, toys and Kongs for the dogs.
