PEI Humane Society: $3,000,000 fundraising campaign to build new animal shelter

The PEI Humane Society is looking for Islanders to get involved in helping to raise $3,000,000 to build a new animal shelter on their 2-acre property in Charlottetown.

The Expanding Our Paw Print capital campaign has been in the works for several years and has met with many challenges. Thanks to the pandemic, inflation, and increased demand on services, PEI’s only animal shelter has had a tough time moving the project forward.

“We initially planned to expand our existing shelter to save money,” says Ashley Travis, development & communications coordinator for the PEIHS. “But when our 18-month-long search for a temporary facility yielded nothing, and prices increasing with inflation, we were forced to pivot.”

Travis says that with nowhere to go, the shelter team made the decision to build new instead of expanding. Now, the team will remain in their existing shelter while building a new facility at the back of their property. Site levelling has begun with construction expected to start soon. With this change in plans however, comes the need to increase fundraising efforts.

The cost of the project will exceed $5,800,000. With $2,800,000 already raised for the campaign, the shelter needs to raise another $3,000,000 to see their new facility completed and they are looking to their community for support.
