A Request for Patience

The PEI Humane Society is working under significant pressure and is over capacity.

Here’s a peek behind the curtain as to why…

We currently have over 200 animals in our care (229 at time of creating this post), putting us well over capacity both in-house and in our foster network. Nearly every kennel at the shelter is full and our foster volunteers’ homes are ready to burst.
Only a few of the 200+ animals in our care are up for adoption – and the rest may never be. You won’t see them on our website and you may never learn their stories because they are part of the many other programs we offer besides our adoption program. This is why we are asking for your patience as we work hard to support the care of these animals.

Many of the animals we are looking after are part of a large number of cases currently being investigated by our animal protection department. This department has been flooded with calls over the last several months, causing delays across the board. This is why we ask the public to please avoid mass-reporting animal welfare concerns. If you have new information about an ongoing animal protection case that you feel will assist in the investigation, please make a report. But avoid mass-reporting or “flooding” our lines as this impacts all areas of our work, including adoptions and intakes. If you know someone has reported a complaint, please trust that we will investigate. For more information on how we investigate complaints, click here: https://peihumanesociety.com/animal-protection/

Mass-reporting, piling-on, and speculating about cases on social media is very taxing for all staff, both in terms of the team’s mental health and in the amount of work that goes into investigations behind the scenes. It helps nothing, slows things down, and only makes things worse for the hundreds of animals in our care.
The majority of the animals we are caring for are too young or too sick to go up for adoption yet. We are investigating, providing veterinary care for, and housing these animals – because that’s what we do. Beyond animal protection and adoption, we provide compassionate, lifesaving care for animals that have nowhere else to go. And that takes time.
Increasingly, our team is seeing hateful, negative language used on social media to refer to our organization and our work. Though we understand the demand for our work will always be high, we ask that the public understand that we are working within the system as it exists. We understand some do not think we’re working fast enough, but please trust us when we say we are working as hard as we can with the resources we have available to us. And beyond that, we are constantly advocating behind the scenes to create change when we see things are not working. But again, this takes time.
So far in 2025, we have taken in 974 animals. Our incredible community has helped us get the majority of those that were part of the adoption program their forever homes (512 so far!) but like anyone in animal welfare will tell you, there’s always more where that came from.
As a shelter, our duty to the 200+ animals in our charge is our first priority. This means we will continue to work through our waitlist of intakes, bringing animals in and putting them up for adoption when kennel space opens up, but we ask for your patience at this time. For those on our waitlist, we will do our best to keep you informed of our intake schedule. And for those who want to reach out for help, please still do so, but understand that our capacity is limited right now and timelines may be extended.
Lastly, above all else, please be kind to our staff. They are working extremely hard to do right by our animals and our community and they’re doing so with limited space and resources. Our new shelter is not yet ready for us to move in, so we are working with what we have and trying to do so in light of everything the world is throwing at us. So please be patient, please be kind, and please trust us to do our job.

If you would like to help, here’s some actionable steps you can take:

🫶Share available animals on your social media to tell your network about who is available. Most recently, we shared Mila who is still looking for her forever home.

😇Apply to be a foster – especially if you’re interested in fostering adult dogs. Fostering is a great way to give back and be involved without taking on an animal long-term. You can apply to be a foster by clicking here: https://peihumanesociety.com/foster/

😸🐶If you have the ability to do so, adopt! Our shelter is over capacity right now thanks to the factors mentioned above. But adopting an animal frees up space and can help move the process along faster for another animal in need. Check our website and follow us on social media so you’ll be first to know when a new animal becomes available.

🥰Donate! We always need help feeding animals and purchasing supplies. To make a donation of funds, click here: https://peihumanesociety.com/donate/, or see our most-needed items on our wish list here: https://peihumanesociety.com/donate/wish-list/
