Your Pet = Your Family

The PEI Humane Society understands that your pet is your family.

We encourage pet owners to know their rights when it comes to pet ownership and provide tools to help pet owners find pet-inclusive housing. Advocating for your pet throughout the home-hunting process can be difficult.

Check out these resoures to learn more about what you can do and about how we’re advocating for your family every day.

Learn to Write a Pet Resume

Just like a resume you would create for a job, a pet resume is a summary of your pet’s qualities and personality traits that demonstrates your responsibility as a pet owner and shows that your pet will not cause problems in your prospective new rental.

Advocating for Your Rights: Petition

In August of 2024, the PEI Humane Society rang the alarm announcing the presentation of a petition put forth by Humane Canada. The purpose of the petition was to demonstrate the vast need and desire for animal-friendly housing across the country.

The PEI Humane Society sees hundred of animal surrendered every year whose only reason for being surrendered was a lack of available animal-friendly housing. This issue fills our shelter and breaks up families unnecessarily, often during already challenging personal crisis. This needs to change.

Advocating for Emergency Planning: Petition

The PEI Humane Society, in partnership with Humane Canada, is asking Islanders to sign a petition to advocate for pets to be included in emergency planning and funding programs.
Islanders know that pets are family. And we also know that when disaster strikes, supporting pet the care of lost and unhoused pets is an important part of community rebuilding.

We deserve a home: the companion animal’s unheard voice in the conversation around affordable housing

A lack of affordable, animal-friendly housing on PEI has resulted in significantly higher surrender rates at PEI’s only animal shelter. The staff are overwhelmed with animals as pet owners are forced to make heartbreaking decisions between keeping their families and pets together or keeping a roof over their heads.
