Choosing a Rescue
Rescuing a pet is a noble pursuit, but learning how to do it ethically can be challenging
Choosing Between
Canadian & American Rescues
In Canada, we often hear about rescue groups bringing animals into the country from places like the USA. But did you know that there are groups right here in Canada working to deal with pet overpopulation that would love to have you adopt from them instead?
Rescuing domestically often requires working directly with a rehoming group, rescue or shelter here in Canada and partnering with a transport service to bring animals to their new home.
Know all the ins and outs of rescue before making your decision. If you choose to support a group that is bringing animals in from the USA or other international location, we suggest learning more about the many resources that exist to help you rescue Canadian animals by CLICKING HERE
What to Look For When Adopting a New Pet
Not all shelters and rescue operations are alike. Though organizational mandates and mission statements may differ, some information is universal. Important information about health, wellness, behaviour, and history can and should be shared as transparently as possible (while respecting confidentiality).
We recommend having a list of questions at the ready when you first start your conversation with a rescue or shelter. Whether adopting a pet from a Humane Society, SPCA, or an international rescue, it’s important to know what to look for.
Though this list isn’t comprehensive, we hope it gives you a good idea where to start.
Bringing home a new pet is exciting!
But make sure to take your time.
We understand how tempting it can be to jump into pet ownership with both feet. But the PEI Humane Society advocates for informed pet ownership whether you’re adopting from our shelter or working with an international rescue. Information is key to ensuring you and your new pet get the right start on your new journey together.
