Choosing Canadian Rescues

Interprovincial transport is easier than you think!

We’ve all seen the stories coming from within the United States: hundreds of thousands of dogs in need of homes, with volunteers begging to bring them into Canada. While we acknowledge that the United States’ situation is cause for alarm and the problem can certainly seem overwhelming, we also want to remind Islanders that we have homeless pets in crisis right here in Canada.

Pet overpopulation is not just an American problem. Canadian communities are dealing with the same problems right here in our own backyard and due to a lack of media attention, many are being forgotten about in favour of bringing American animals over the border.

When looking to adopt a pet, the PEI Humane Society recommends working with Canadian shelters and rescue organizations to adopt Canadian dogs domestically to help ease pet over-population problems right here at home. There are several programs within Canada that focus on rescuing Canadian dogs from areas where overpopulation is becoming problematic. Several of these programs are even breed-specific, allowing those adopting from them to choose the breed of the dog they are rescuing.

Though many of these programs are spread across Canada, several amazing volunteer-run programs exist to help transport your new pup to its new home. Programs such as:

SafePet: SEE THEIR WEBSITE HERE

Freedom Drivers: SEE THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE HERE

Of course, the PEI Humane Society will always advocate for choosing to work with an animal shelter directly. But smaller rescue organizations across Canada are doing life-saving work in helping to ease the burden from shelters nation-wide.

Though bringing dogs in from the United States can seem like a great solution to over-population, we ask all prospective adopters to consider domestic adoption. To learn more about what to look for when considering working with any rescue (domestic or international), CHECK OUT THIS ARTICLE.
