PEI Humane Society Announces Leadership Transition

Charlottetown, PEI – July 7, 2026
The Board of Directors of the PEI Humane Society is announcing the retirement of Carolyn Thorne, who has served as Executive Director of the charity since 2019. Thorne’s retirement will take effect on July 31, 2026, concluding a tenure marked by significant growth in PEIHS programs, community partnerships, and animal welfare outcomes across Prince Edward Island.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to Carolyn for her years of dedicated leadership,” said Tessa Roberts, President of the Board of Directors. “Under her direction, the PEI Humane Society has become a stronger, more resilient organization, and countless animals and families across our community have benefited from her vision and commitment. We wish her every happiness in this well-earned next chapter.”
During her time as Executive Director for PEIHS, Thorne navigated COVID-19 restrictions, expanded support for animal welfare, strengthened community outreach, and built supportive relationships with many government and funding partners. Most notably, the development of the new building and home for PEIHS would not have been possible without her careful oversight and project management. Her leadership has helped position the PEI Humane Society as a trusted resource for animal welfare on the Island.
To ensure a smooth transition, the Board has appointed Chris Newell as Acting Executive Director, effective August 1, 2026. Newell has over 5 years of experience as the Animal Care Manager of PEIHS, along with a background in non-profit community outreach and education. The Board will work closely with Newell to ensure the operations and needs of the Organization are taken care of and our community continues to be served with the utmost care.
