The PEI Humane Society is limiting intakes of cats to their facility due to an outbreak of Panleukopenia. Those who have adopted cats from the shelter within the window for potential infection will be contacted by the shelter staff. In the meantime, the shelter is reminding Islanders of the importance of keeping your cat’s vaccinations up-to-date.

“Close to 90% of the cats we see at our shelter are either unvaccinated or not up-to-date on their vaccines,” says Ashley Travis, Development & Communications Coordinator for PEI’s only animal shelter. “If you’re unsure of your cat’s vaccine status, contact your veterinarian.”

The shelter has seen an increase in infected cats recently and is limiting intakes to ensure the outbreak does not spread. The shelter is implementing sanitation protocols in infected areas and has isolated symptomatic animals. Staff are asking the public to be patient as all precautions are put in place for the safety of animals both inside and outside of the shelter.

Panleukopenia is a virus which decreases the white blood cell count in cats, causing lethargy, reduced immunity and making the cat susceptible to other infections.
