Reporting Process

The PEI Humane Society (PEIHS) is informing the public that all reports or concerns made to the PEIHS animal protection team are confidential and thoroughly investigated. The PEIHS envisions humane treatment and care for all companion animals.

The goal is to provide education and allow owners to ensure the proper care required under the law.

If an animal(s) appears neglected, suffering, or in chronic pain, an order is issued under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) to seek veterinarian care or seized if in need of urgent care. This care could include treatment or end of life care, including pain medication for comfort.

Every owner has the right to appeal an order or a seizure under the AWA. A provincially appointed appeal board decides if the PEIHS order or seizure is justified. If ruled justified, an owner must comply with the recommendations of the appeal board.

If the owner does not comply with the recommendation that is in the best interest of the animal(s), that animal(s) could be seized or not returned to the owner. Only under the care of the PEIHS will any decisions be made regarding the outcome of an animal(s).

The PEIHS supports the veterinarian community who cares for Island animals with such compassion, knowledge, and ethical standards. Under the AWA, a veterinarian shall, without delay, report to the PEIHS any event that the veterinarian believes on reasonable grounds an animal is not receiving adequate care when injured or suffering from illness. Any veterinarian is legally bound to report an animal who is in distress.
